Basket add-ons reveal customer identity
The second item tells you more than demographics
The first item is the headline; the second is the story
Two baskets with the same hero SKU can mean different things. One adds batteries and a spare filter — maintenance. Another adds a gift wrap and a premium variant — occasion buying.
For dark stores, that distinction affects pick path, substitution policy, and whether same-day cut-off messaging lands.
Use attach patterns in operations, not just marketing
When attach rates cluster around certain pairs, store them adjacently in the layout designer. When add-ons are fragile or temperature-sensitive, batch picking rules should not treat them as generic lines.
Customer RFM and order history in Dark Store Systems help you see who repeats which patterns — without exporting spreadsheets every Monday.
Keep claims honest
Attach rate alone does not predict lifetime value. Combine recency, frequency, and margin on fulfilled orders — not on cart abandonment fantasies.
